OUGD401 - Study Task 05 - Practice-based research workshop

I have been given the task to learn about Practice based research



This is the form of research methodology that uses practice alongside other forms, as a means finding, collecting and creating knowledge.While this is used to create an understanding of the a given issue, practice-based research acknowledges the role of 'making' in establishing this understanding.


When it came to choosing a subject, something interesting to me which I would enjoy exploring, I had to apply the three separate points, 'Technique', 'content' and 'communication', to my chosen subject.

My topic would be Branding/Product communication, as this was heavily linked to the subject of consumerism which I studied previously. I feel expressing this topic will lead me to a lot of new information from branching out on this topic by making new points.


What technique is involved in this topic

Explanation - How a brand explains the story through the product.


Exploration - How a brand explores the customer through the use of product
Emotion - How the brand emotionally connects with a customer, positive/negative

Conversation - Branding using text to provoke the idea of thought through a product
Attraction - The senses that a brand will try to connect with through the use of product 
Consistency - brand style being kept closely similar to give the sense of stability
Naming - Brand naming which will becomes an influence and a memory


The Content

Material - Material that a brand will use which relates to attraction, effectiveness, cost
Color - A base color that a brand will usually always stay safe with
Style - how the style differentiates from any other
Amount/size - Value 
Accessibility - Need/want
Image - Attractiveness
Text - Communication 
Advertisement - Reputation 

The above points also cover all of the possible ways how a brand communicates.

Social Media - Reviews, Comments, Images, Information

Then by taking my topic and points I will relate to the following:

Research and analysis - By carrying out research into how brands best communicate to customers through the use of all aspects of communication. i will research into the type of connection that is most popular. How brands communicate to the audience through the use of conscious and subconscious methods.

i will then analyse my data do give me a clear/better understanding to the issue of my chosen topic.


By taking what I already know and applying that to what I will find out, I will be able to see the full ongoing method into how a secure communication is built between the brand and the customer. 

When carrying out my research the question i will keep in my head is 'How do brands effectively communicate to the audience, how is this changing, and how are brands adapting the the constantly changing world?'. 

My hypothesis is that as society begins to grow and evolve, brands are finding it increasingly hard to communicate to customers compared to before the 20th century. Brands are now having to turn to more subliminal methods to subconsciously connect. 

I will need to create a plan, as to how I will begin my research and what i will require to carry this out. How then I will use this along side my own opinion and personal judgment on this topic to turn this into words I can effectively communicate and understand.
